SPINAL DISC PAIN

How the KiRO Clinic helps chiropractic care for herniated discs, sciatica, nerve pain & disc degeneration?

Spinal disc pain can be severely debilitating, making it difficult to sit, stand, sleep, or move without discomfort. Whether caused by a herniation, disc bulge, or degeneration, disc-related issues often lead to nerve pain, inflammation, and restricted movement. At the KiRO Clinic, we offer expert chiropractic care and 1-1 exercise guidance to help relieve pain, restore motion, and improve spinal health, naturally and effectively.

WHAT IS SPINAL DISC PAIN?

Between each vertebra in your spine lies an intervertebral disc, which acts as a shock-absorbing cushion that protects your spine and allows flexibility. When these discs are damaged, worn, or inflamed, they can cause localised pain and/or radiating nerve symptoms, depending on the severity and location.

Disc-related pain can affect the neck (cervical spine),  mid-back (thoracic spine), or lower back (lumbar spine), and often impacts posture, mobility and quality of life.

See below for common disc conditions we treat.

Disc herniation

A disc herniation occurs when the inner gel-like material (nucleus pulposus) pushes through a weakened or torn outer layer (annulus fibrosus).

This may press on spinal nerves and cause:

  • Sharp or electric pain

  • Sciatica or arm pain

  • Tingling, numbness, or weakness

  • ain that worsens when sitting, bending, or coughing

Annular disc tear

Small tears in the outer layer of the disc can result in:

  • Local inflammation

  • Deep, persistent pain

  • Pain when sitting or lifting

Disc protrusion / Bulging disc

A bulging disc is when the disc extends outward without fully rupturing. It can still cause compression of nearby nerves, leading to:

  • Back or neck pain

  • Radiating pain into limbs

  • Intermittent numbness or burning

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) / disc wearing

As discs lose water content and height with age, they
can become stiff, brittle, and less shock-absorbent, resulting in:

  • Stiffness and chronic aching

  • Increased risk of disc bulge or herniation

  • Pain with prolonged sitting or activity

Decreased disc height & facet joint hypertrophy

As discs shrink or wear down, nearby facet joints can enlarge and become arthritic to compensate, causing:

  • Localised spinal pain

  • Reduced range of motion

  • Nerve root irritation or compression

Nerve pain, sciatica & radiculopathy

When disc issues affect the nearby spinal nerves, the result is often radiculopathy - nerve pain that radiates down an arm or leg.

Symptoms may include:

  • Sciatica: pain running from the lower back down the buttock and leg

  • Burning or electric shock sensations

  • Tingling or numbness in the extremities

  • Muscle weakness in the arms or legs

  • Increased pain when sneezing, coughing, or bending forward

How Do chiropractors treat
disc-related pain?

Chiropractic care focuses on addressing the root causes of disc pain: poor spinal alignment, muscle imbalance, movement dysfunction and underlying weakness muscle chains.

Our treatment may include:

  • Spinal adjustments (modified for disc conditions)

  • Flexion-distraction therapy to gently decompress the spine

  • Postural and ergonomic correction

  • Soft tissue release to relieve muscular tension around the affected area

  • Movement retraining and core stability rehab

  • Nerve mobilisation techniques to ease radiculopathy

We tailor each treatment to your specific condition, stage of healing, age, ability and comfort level.

At the KiRO Clinic, we understand that spinal disc conditions require precise, cautious care.

Our team is trained to work with:

  • Acute disc injuries (recent trauma or strain)

  • Chronic disc degeneration

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

  • Recurrent disc-related episodes

When to seek help for disc pain

You should seek professional help if you experience:

  • Weakness of the affected limb

  • Radiating pain down the arm or leg

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in a limb

  • Pain that worsens with coughing or sitting

  • Difficulty walking, standing, or sleeping due to pain

  • Loss of flexibility or mobility in the spine

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to managing disc pain — often helping patients avoid injections or surgery.
